Department of Strength of Materials and Structures
is one of the most powerful research centres involved in the field of
stability, post-buckling and load capacity of thin-walled structures. The Head
of Department professor Marian Królak is the vice chairman of the Committee
of Machine Design of Polish
Academy of Sciences.

The Department organizes periodical Stability of Structures Symposium which
takes place every three years, the last one took place from 7 to 11 September
2009, the next one will be organized in 2012.

Scientific actives of the Department are focused
on:
·
theoretical,
numerical (including FEM) and experimental analysis of stress and strain in
machine and structure elements;
·
strength of
materials and structures;
·
stability,
postbuckling state and load carrying capacity of thin-walled structures;
·
fracture mechanics
of composite
Research areas based on human and
technological potential are:
·
Calculations of
strength, stability, vibrations, stress and strain state in machines and
structures based on FEM software package
·
Tests of
mechanical and strength properties of materials (compression, tensile and
bending tests)
·
Experimental
determination of stress and strain in structure elements using Hottinger’s
and Vishay’s strain gauge automotive measurement sets
·
Courses of finite
element method and experimental methods in mechanics
